Cycling on Cyprus:
Introducing the partner country of EUROBIKE 2010...
The recipe for success of the third largest island in the Mediterranean is based on its Mediterranean climate and varied landscape – an island that has shown itself to be a top cycling destination, thanks to its richly contrasting topography. Cycling enthusiasts have a huge choice of different routes with a total length of 2500 kilometres. Cyprus offers a wide range of touring options for every level of difficulty – for ambitious racing cyclists, mountain bikers and leisure cyclists. Well constructed roads with little traffic, flat coastal routes and steep mountainous terrain all tempt visitors to take to the road on two wheels.
The region along the West coast is best known for its sandy and pebble beaches, unspoilt Nature and mountainous regions punctuated by steep climbs. Mountain bikers really get their money’s worth at a height of 800 to 1,380 metres on the Akamas peninsula and in the Troodos Mountains. The German professional cyclist and Cross Country Olympic Champion, Sabine Spitz, also makes the most of conditions on the Mediterranean island to prepared for her competitions. In comparison, racing cyclists are drawn more to the coastal regions: flat roads, lush fields and meadows and narrow roads with little traffic provide ideal conditions for undisrupted endurance training. The MILRAM team of professional racing cyclists saw for themselves the ideal conditions when they moved their training base to Cyprus for two weeks in January 2010.
